Shea, Kurker & Doherty Bask in Summer Success
To say it has been an exciting summer for many of the VJW players would be an understatement. A total of 12 players from the program were selected by USA Hockey to take part in this summer’s Development Camps, which have been held at sites across the country. The elite group of players who participate in the national camp represent the top two percent in each age division.

The latest Warriors player to return from camp is Casey Shea, a member of Bob Carpenter’s ’94 Elite team. Shea, who has been a part of the VJW program since he was a Mite player, traveled to Rochester this month and was one of the standouts for Team Royal. He finished as the third leading scorer on his team with one goal and two assists. Interestingly, one of his teammates on Team Royal was Henrik Samuelsson, whose father Ulf played as a defenseman in the NHL for 18 seasons.

The next stop for Shea will be Woburn High School in the fall!

While Shea recovers from his trip to New York, two of his teammates will be packing their passports in preparation for a trip to Stockholm, Sweden. Sam Kurker and Daniel Doherty were chosen to represent Team Massachusetts at the USA/Sweden International Friendship Series from August 14-22.

All three players, as well as defenseman Daniel O'Connor, were participants in Mass Hockey’s Satellite Training Program and recently attended the John Cunnif Camp at Cushing Academy. Teammate Michael Cusack was also part of the group that took part in the John Cunnif Camp!

Kurker and Doherty will be well seasoned to take on high school hockey in the fall. Kurker is headed to St. John’s Prep, while Doherty will compete at Belmont Hill. O'Connor and Cusack will also be taking their games to the next level by competing for North Andover High School and Central Catholic High School, respectively.

“These players have worked so hard to reach this level,” said Fred Devereaux, VJW director of player development. “Only a small percentage of players from the country are selected to compete at this level and it’s a testament to their hard work and determination over the years.

Congratulations go out to Shea, Kurker and Doherty for their success!!
